Missing both her legs,i came up with the crazy idea to make her new ones out of solid steel spikes. ( she was up for the adventure )…We created a fantasy situation and harnessed her in and hung her from the grid at Funny Farm studio’s to make it all come to life…BEAUTIFUL.

If you google “3r1z0” you will find a lot of pictures of Kate in similar situations, posted apparently by her partner with this disclaimer:

Kate loves to be spread all over the net, and asks fans to re-post her pics to your own galleries and blogs. Her family, friends, former employers and classmates have seen these photos. She has been recognized and photographed in public by fans. There’s no going back, so we will just have to make more FREE PORN for you to share!

The phrase “no going back” in the disclaimer troubles me, but, supposing that this is true (although I would be very interested to talk to her about it), two things are clear to me: that she consents and that she gets off on humiliation. Which is great when people view the images in their intended context - as BDSM porn. But when stripped of context, the humiliation comes from mockery and othering, which is where the issue of consent becomes incredibly grey to me. She is being mocked and othered not merely for her alternative sexuality, but for the idea that she, as an ‘undesirable’ fat woman, would dare to be enthusiastic about her sexuality at all. I have never seen anyone post porn of thin women in similar situations to mock it.

It’s possible that Kate accepted in advance that her images would be reposted for shock value, and that people would be malicious and judgmental. Which would mean either a) that she accepts outside judgement but doesn’t welcome it, or b) that she accepts it and gets off on it. If the latter is true, then everyone who has seen this image is complicit in her sexual activities - but did not necessarily consent to that.

While I think that this particular issue is most definitely an issue of consent, it seems unresolvable and minor. I also feel no sympathy for anyone coming across this image (or ones like it) unknowingly, and reacting in disgust or something similar because of her appearance. In that sense, I think this image is radical and beautiful, and having her (seemingly) empowered sexuality shoved in the faces of those who abjectify her is a delightful and subversive byproduct of her and her partner’s output. However, that doesn’t mitigate the harm done by the reactions themselves, even if that possibility was welcomed or even merely accounted for in the act of publishing these photos in the first place.

Ugh, I’m confused.
